More than 200 years ago a rebellion of enslaved people and their allies in France's richest plantation colony of Saint Domingue led to the formation of the independent nation of Haiti, named after the Taino name for the island, Ayiti. The new constitution abolished slavery. Haiti’s hard won independence inspired freedom seeking people from far and wide and at the same time sparked a strong backlash from the United States and European empires, whose economies had been built on slavery and the trans-Atlantic slave trade. A similar dynamic exists today, in which the popular liberation movement working for democracy and a more egalitarian society is constantly up against imperial powers that collaborate with a small Haitian elite to maintain an extremely exploitative system. </span></p><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">In the early 2000s, leading up to the bicentenary of Haitian independence, the Fanmi Lavalas government, with Jean-Bertrand Aristide as President, came closer than ever before to fulfilling those egalitarian and democratic dreams. The Fanmi Lavalas party was formed out of the Lavalas movement that had overthrown the “Baby Doc” Duvalier dictatorship in 1986. The Fanmi Lavalas government was one that was elected in a landslide victory in an election in which a high proportion of the eligible electorate participated. With the advent of Martelly's successor, Jovenel Moïse, who's mandate ended on February 7th, 2020, we have witnessed the complete collapse of our institutions: justice, parliament, the Court of Auditors and now the police. All these institutions are concentrated in the hands of one man, Jovenel Moïse. Mr. Moïse, with the blessing of the international community, has taken our country hostage and he is literally killing us every day.”</span></p><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Husoni Raymond, representing Black Lives Matter, Fredericton summed up one theme from the talk, referring to "the need for a global solidarity against anti-Black racism” and remarking that “even current days, the way in which colonization operates … businesses and governments still exploit the resources of countries and then look at them and think that they're poor and deserving of little or no financial aid, when in fact these countries are rich in resources but they're still exploited and exported to the ‘developed’ world which makes poor countries unliveable and then when people try to migrate for better lives for their families they're seen as pests."</span></p><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">In her speech, El Jones, a spoken word poet, educator, journalist and community activist living in Nova Scotia commented, “so we very much connect Canada's imperial history in places like Haiti to Canada's imperial history within our borders and so when I talk about Lavalle for example, the immigration detention centre… Though we do not keep numbers in Canada, anecdotally we know that the vast majority of people who are incarcerated in immigration detention are Jamaicans, Somalis, Nigerians and, of course, Haitian people who, as has been reviewed in the previous speech [by Jafrikayiti], are determined to be threats, always determined to be some special form of danger and we have persistently seen violence against Haitian people, not only in the United States, but also in Canada as well."</span></p><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Jafrikayiti, a radio show host, author, artist, activist and Canadian Civil Servant originally from Haiti, told the story of an encounter he had with the kind of mentality that led to the 2004 coup: "I went to Haiti for the bicentennial, and on Dec 31, 2003, I was in one of the big hotels of Petionville in the lobby facing this man [Luigi Einaudi, who was the Organization of American States (OAS) Assistant Secretary General at the time](4)</span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> and Canadian envoy to the OAS, David Lee, who was with him. They looked drunk but that’s no excuse. Luigi Einaudi said ‘The real problem with Haiti is that the international community is so screwed up and divided that they are letting Haitians run Haiti.’ We asked him to repeat it and he did. Of course when we returned to Canada we published all kinds of stuff and the media refused to print the quote on account that there's a word ‘screwed up’ there that's not kosher. I said I cannot fix his words for him. That's what he said." The Haitians running Haiti who Luigi Einaudi was referring to were, of course, the elected members of the government of Jean-Bertrand Aristide.</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Terry Gibbs, who represented the event host and the Atlantic Regional Solidarity Network, opened by saying: "I think all of the organizers and the participants, and I'm sure many in this room, have been brought together sharing a deep belief in the power of education to transform things, the power of sharing knowledge and stories ... and mostly in the power of regular people to change things for the better, and that's always been true throughout history. We repudiate the acts of intimidation and brutality by state security forces working on behalf of TC Energy and the Coastal Gaslink Project, including the use of snipers and assault teams against land defenders courageously protecting their inherent rights. We denounce provincial and federal governments for their role in exacerbating the violence perpetrated against the Wet’suwet’en Nation, including torture, the burning of homes, destruction of sacred medicines and criminalization. We fully support the sovereignty of the Wet’suwet’en Nation and the decisions of the clans in the territory to defend and protect their inherent rights.</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 12pt; margin-top: 12pt;"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">As a network that has spent four decades monitoring and denouncing state-sponsored terror in the Americas, we are outraged by ongoing Canadian state actions to implement by force a colonial agenda of exploitation of land and water to benefit private economic interests. From our experience, we know that this is a driving factor behind genocide across the Americas and we repudiate these actions against Indigenous Nations across Turtle Island as a continuation of this agenda. For generations, Peoples and Nations across the Americas have been compelled to put their bodies on the front lines to defend the water, culture, and way of life, due to the dispossession of land and destruction as a result of colonial government policies to benefit private corporations with the support of national and international financial institutions. We implore that the Supreme Court Ruling Delgamuukw vs. BC be upheld and also exhort the Canadian State to recognize that Indigenous sovereignty over traditional territory extends beyond the confines of colonial court decisions.</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 12pt; margin-top: 12pt;"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">As the world faces its most critical moment for the climate, we honour and give thanks to the defenders who are courageously protecting the sacred, our common home, for today and future generations. In particular, we urge you to act to ensure due process standards in the trial of David Castillo for his alleged role as co-perpetrator in the murder. </p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 15.6933px; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;">Berta Cáceres, co-founder of the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH), was murdered in her home five years ago after leading a campaign to stop the illegal implementation of the "Agua Zarca" hydroelectric project on the Gualcarque River, sacred to the Lenca People. This project, owned and operated by the Desarrollos Energéticos (DESA) Company of the Atala Zablah family, was financed with international funds. In 2018, seven people were convicted of her murder as material authors, while the trial of former military intelligence officer David Castillo, general manager of DESA, began in April 2021 and is scheduled to end this month. </p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 15.6933px; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;">Through the evidence presented by the Public Prosecutor's Office and the private prosecution representing the family of Berta Cáceres, the ongoing murder trial has established that David Castillo was a key player serving as a liaison between the operational hit squad structure, convicted in 2018 and the executive and management/political structure of the DESA company that knew about and consented to the assassination.</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 15.6933px; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;">The murder of Berta Cáceres on March 2, 2016 has its origins in 2010 when the concession of the Gualcarque River was granted to DESA, a company that committed acts of corruption and coordinated attacks against the Lenca people defending their rights; this has been demonstrated through the parallel "Fraud on the Gualcarque" corruption case, brought forth by the former OAS Support Mission to End Impunity and Corruption in Honduras (MACCIH) and the Special Prosecutor Against Corruption, in which David Castillo is also being prosecuted. Due to the tireless work of Berta's family and COPINH to bring to justice all perpetrators of the crime, and to cancel the Agua Zarca hydroelectric project, they face defamation campaigns, threats and intimidation. As a result, they are beneficiaries of precautionary measures by the IACHR, which must be fully implemented and guaranteed.</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 15.6933px; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;">Berta Caceres’ tragic assassination was a blow not only to the defender community in the Americas, but to the entire world, as it clearly reflected the context of risk that human rights defenders in Honduras face. Berta Cáceres has become a symbol of hope and courage for all people fighting for justice, dignity and the vindication of their rights in the face of the illegal implementation of extractive projects in their ancestral territories.</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 15.6933px; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;">Honduras is the most dangerous country in the world for land and environmental defenders. <h4>
The following is The Atlantic Regional Solidarity Network's statement on the popular uprising in Haiti and the anti-democratic role Canada and the UN are playing:</h4>
<div class="MsoBodyText">
<span style="font-size: 14.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoBodyText">
The Atlantic Regional
Solidarity Network is a network of groups and individuals who are working in
solidarity with people struggling for social justice and environmental
protection in Latin America, the Caribbean and in our own region. We are
writing to express our support for the popular movement in Haiti, which has
been pushing for the resignation of President Martelly and Prime Minister
Lamothe, and for a process to begin that will result in the holding of long
delayed elections. Prime Minister Lamothe did resign on December 14<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">th</span>,
but President Martelly has nominated Evans Paul to take Lamothe’s place, and
has reached an unconstitutional accord with the leaders of the Senate and the
Chamber of Deputies to extend members terms in office. Many protesters have
also called for better living conditions and the end of the occupation of their
country by the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH).
Thousands of people have taken to the streets of several cities in Haiti on
many occasions in the past few months to make the strength of their convictions
known. MINUSTAH, the police and other officials have reacted with violence,
resulting in many injuries and the deaths of at least six protesters. Many have
also been arrested (see “Anti-Martelly Protests Grow in Haiti” <span style="color: #282828;">by Isabelle L. Papillon and Kim Ives, <a href="http://haiti-liberte.com/archives/volume8-16/Anti-Martelly%20Protests.asp"><span style="color: #16176e; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;">Haiti Liberté,

<div class="MsoBodyText">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoBodyText">
The Atlantic Regional
Solidarity Network is particularly concerned about Canada’s role in robbing
Haitians of their democratic rights. The Canadian government was instrumental
in the fraudulent election of President Martelly (see Yves Engler’s book <u>The
Ugly Canadian</u>, pp. 223-225, Red Publishing, Fernwood Publishing, 2012).
Canada has also played a significant role in MINUSTAH over the years. MINUSTAH
was installed in Haiti shortly after the 2004 coup against President Jean
Bertrand Aristide. Aristide and his party, Fanmi Lavalas, had won landslide
victories in elections in 2000. The whole of Haiti’s government, from the local
to the national level was removed from power during the coup. We are convinced
by very credible evidence that this illegal ouster was planned and carried out
by France, Canada and the United States. A paramilitary force, which was
probably backed by the US, and members of the small Haitian elite also played
their part (see <span style="font-family: Helvetica;"><a href="http://www.canadahaitiaction.ca/content/canadians-apologize-haiti-ten-years-after-coup-2004">Canada
Haiti Action Network's: Apology to Haiti</a></span>).<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoBodyText">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoBodyText">
After the devastating
earthquake that hit Haiti five years ago on January 12<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">th</span>, 2010 in
which over 220,000 people were killed and millions lost their homes, there was
a lot of talk of reconstruction. Unfortunately this reconstruction has not come
anywhere near to living up to expectations (see “Outsourcing Haiti: How
disaster relief became a disaster of it” <span style="color: #333399;">By <a href="http://www.bostonreview.net/author/jake-johnston"><span style="color: #333399; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;">Jake Johnston</span></a>,
published in <a href="http://www.bostonreview.net/world/jake-johnston-haiti-earthquake-aid-caracol"><span style="color: #333399; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;">Boston Review,
January 16, 2014</span></a></span>). In fact further damage was done when
MINUSTAH brought cholera to Haiti through the negligent release of sewage into
the Arbonite and La Mielle Rivers. So far 8,854 people have died and 725,802
have become ill from the disease. Five of the people affected by this outbreak
are suing the UN in a US court (see <a href="http://www.cbc.ca/thecurrent/episode/2014/10/17/us-courts-must-decide-if-united-nations-is-responsible-for-bringing-cholera-to-haiti/">CBC
The Current: US courts must decide if United Nations is responsible for
bringing cholera to Haiti</a>).<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoBodyText">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Times;">As do
Canadians, Haitians have a right to self-determination, including the right to
participate in free and fair elections. We call on the Canadian government to
reverse the democracy-trampling policy that has existed since before the 2004
coup, through both Liberal and Conservative governments. We support the demands
of the popular movement in Haiti for President Martelly’s resignation and for a
truly democratic process, in keeping with the Haitian constitution, to begin so
that free and fair elections can be held as soon as possible. We also call for
an end to the occupation of Haiti by MINUSTAH and for the UN to pay reparations
for bringing cholera to Haiti.</span><!--EndFragment-->

We write today on behalf of the Atlantic Regional Solidarity Network to express our concern over the human rights crisis in Mexico, and to ask the Canadian government to take immediate action. The Atlantic Regional Solidarity Network brings together individuals and organizations from across Atlantic Canada who share a commitment to solidarity with Latin America and the Caribbean. We have been watching with concern the events unfolding in Mexico in recent months, particularly in response to the violence on September 26th directed against a group of students from the Ayotzinapa Normal School, a rural teachers college in Guerrero State. This violence left six young people dead, and 43 forcibly disappeared. Recently found human remains have been analysed by forensic anthropologists and it has been confirmed that they belong to one of the 43 missing students.</div>
<div style="font: 11.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font: 11.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
This tragic event has exposed the deteriorating human rights situation in Mexico, ongoing corruption, and the collusion of state actors with organized crime. It has also mobilized people from across Mexican society who have taken to the streets to demand the return of the remaining 42 missing students and to call for the resignation of high-level Mexican officials. The Governor of Guerrero has already been forced to step down and protests are calling for the resignation of President Enrique Peña Nieto. Protesters have been charged with serious crimes such as conspiracy and involvement in organized crime and are being detained in high security prisons. There are also serious concerns about the safety of human rights defenders who have been accompanying the families of the 43 disappeared students.</div>
<div style="font: 11.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font: 11.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
These events are taking place in the context of the 20th anniversary of the signing of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Like many other free trade agreements, NAFTA was promoted based on the notion that through developing business and trade relationships the human rights situation could be improved. After 20 years of free trade engagement with Mexico, we can now take stock of how this approach to the promotion of human rights abroad has worked.</div>
<div style="font: 11.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font: 11.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
As the families and communities of the 43 disappeared students continue to search for their loved ones, every day more mass graves with unidentified bodies are uncovered. Since 2006, at least 150,000 Mexicans have been murdered. Guerrero has long been one of the most violent states in the country. In 2012, its homicide rate was just short of Honduras’, considered the most violent country in the world. Mexico has also seen a dramatic rise in the number of forced disappearances. Fifty four people go missing in Mexico every week, totalling 22,610 disappearances since 2007. 2014 has been the worst year on record, with 5,098 disappearances.i</div>
<div style="font: 11.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font: 11.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
The tendency of the Mexican government is to focus the blame for this violence on the drug cartels, who wield significant power in Mexico. However, focusing on the cartels exclusively ignores the reality of collusion of state forces including police, military and elected and appointed state officials with organized crime. In Iguala, the students from the Ayotzinapa Normal School were shot at and later seized by police, allegedly at the behest of the mayor of Iguala and his wife. Evidence indicates that the police handed them over to criminal gangs to be tortured and killed. A recently released report by Amnesty International found that “torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment play a central role in policing and public security operations by military and police forces across Mexico. These practices are widespread and are frequently condoned and tolerated by other law enforcement officials, superior officers, prosecutors, judges and some human rights commissions.”ii Recent reports in a national newspaper cite leaked documents that reveal that state officials knew about the attack on the Ayotzinapa students as it was happening and did nothing to stop it. The case of the 43 disappeared students has exposed the deep-seated corruption of the Mexican State, and the collusion of state forces in terrorizing the Mexican civilian population.</div>
<div style="font: 11.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font: 11.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
This current reality of the ongoing human rights “crisis” in Mexico reveals the failure of the ‘free trade’ approach to human rights promotion. Since 1994, when NAFTA was signed into effect, the human rights situation in Mexico has drastically deteriorated. Meanwhile, Canadian foreign investment in the region has significantly increased. Mexico is now the foremost destination abroad for Canadian mining interests, and according to the Canadian Press, exports of Canadian weapons and ammunition to Mexico climbed by 93 per cent between 2011 and 2012. Meanwhile, as you know, the Canadian government is sending millions of dollars to fund the Mexican military and police forces through the Anti-Crime Capacity Building Program (ACCBP).</div>
<div style="font: 11.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
We ask that the Canadian government take immediate action by:</div>
<div style="font: 11.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>Making a public statement calling on the Mexican government to respect the peaceful protesters’ rights to freedom of assembly, association, and speech, and right to protest;</li>
<li>Calling for a guarantee of the safety of human rights defenders, including Vidulfo Rosales and Abel Barrera from the Tlachinollan Human Rights Centre , who have been criminalized for their work in defense of human rights in the state of Guerrero and for accompanying the families of the 43 disappeared students;</li>
<li>Calling for a complete and impartial third-party investigation into the events of September 26th and 27th in Iguala, and the immediate destitution of any and all political officials found to be implicated;</li>
<li>Suspending any further funding for “security” initiatives in Mexico until a complete review of corruption and collusion with organized crime within the Mexican military and police forces has been completed and the issues identified are addressed;</li>
<li>Revising its current hemispheric trade agreements and pursuing a different trade agenda based first on respect for human, labour and environmental rights.</li>
</ul>
<br />
<div style="font: 11.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font: 11.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
The people of Mexico have shown themselves to be strong, resilient, and courageous in standing up against violence and corruption, and we owe them our support.</div>

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – 13 February 2014<br />
<br />
<b>Canada-Honduras FTA will deepen conflict</b><br />
<br />
Civil society organizations from Canada and Quebec are concerned that
the Canada-Honduras Free Trade Agreement (FTA) currently being debated
in the House of Commons will further undermine human rights and
democracy in Honduras. The debate began days after the inauguration of
Juan Orlando Hernandez following highly contested presidential
elections. The elections were fraught with irregularities as well as
violence, and deemed fraudulent by most independent international
observers. The proposed legislation sends the message that Canada
rewards illegitimate governments as long as they serve Canadian economic
interests.<br />
<br />
The bilateral trade deal was signed on November 5th, 2013, in the
lead up to the presidential election, despite wide-spread opposition and
mounting evidence to suggest that the deal will exacerbate the social
and human rights crisis. Since the 2009 military coup against
democratically-elected President Manuel Zelaya, violence and repression
have reached an all-time high. Human rights defenders, women’s rights
activists, members of the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, trans and queer)
community, the Garifuna, Indigenous people, union leaders, farmers and
journalists are being systematically threatened or killed.<br />
<br />
Police corruption and militarization of the state:<br />
<br />
Police corruption is rampant with high ranking members implicated in
criminal activity, contributing to widespread impunity as well as a
judicial and law-enforcement system that perpetuates the problem. Just
recently, Constantino Zavala the police chief in the western province of
Lempira was suspended for allegedly being involved in drug trafficking.<br />
<br />
The return of the military security state has been a major focus of
President Hernandez who spearheaded the legislative effort that created
the Law of Public Order Military Police (PMOP). To fund this new
military police, the government was able to draw 24.5 million lempiras
($1.2 million), from a new “security tax” paid for by large
corporations. These new units will take over neighbourhoods, residential
developments, or public spaces in order to crack down on supposed
illegal activities. Human rights defenders in Honduras have testified
that they are witnessing the reactivation of the death squads of the 80s
with a pattern of assassinations of women, youth and political
opponents.<br />
<br />
During presidential elections on November 24, 2013, many Hondurans
were hopeful that a new political landscape would ensure a break from
traditional two party politics in Honduras and lead to improved
conditions. However, the situation has taken a turn for the worst with
Hernandez’ questionable election. International and local human rights
observers reported wide-spread vote buying, irregularities in the voter
registry, selling of electoral credentials, militarization, intimidation
and even assassinations. Nonetheless, Hernandez was declared the winner
and the country has been driven further into crisis.<br />
<br />
Canada contributes to social conflict:<br />
<br />
Although the FTA has not yet been implemented, Canadian investments
are already contributing to social conflict in Honduras, particularly in
the mining, export manufacturing and tourism sectors.<br />
<br />
The Canadian government provided technical assistance and support for
the General Mining and Hydrocarbons Law, passed in January 2013.
Notably, the new mining law lifts a seven-year moratorium on new mining
projects and earmarks 2% of the royalties paid by extractive companies
for a Security Tax to help fund Honduran state security. The law paves
the way for new mining projects which have given rise to increased
conflict and militarization in affected communities where mining
projects operate. According to the Honduras Documentation Centre, 52% of
all conflict in Honduras is rooted in natural resource management.<br />
<br />
The
most notorious case is that of Vancouver-based Goldcorp which operated
the San Martin gold and silver mine in Valle de Siria. The project’s
legacy is one of water contamination, dried up streams, and reports of
serious public health problems in surrounding communities which have yet
to be fully addressed.<br />
In the garment and textile export sector, the factories of
Montreal-based Gildan Activewear in northwestern Honduras are noted for
the debilitating work-related injuries suffered by workers due to
excessively long work shifts and high production targets and for firing
workers for attempting to unionize. Finally, in the tourism sector,
Canadian investments are displacing Indigenous and Afro-Honduran peoples
from their territories with no respect whatsoever for their cultural
and land rights.<br />
<br />
It is misleading to argue that the FTA will improve the situation in
Honduras. FTAs severely weaken the ability of government to legislate
for the public good and undermine community, human, labour and
environmental rights. Meanwhile, investor rights provisions are
substantive, allowing corporations to sue governments if they make
decisions companies disagree with. The environmental and labour side
agreements are mere window dressing devoid of any enforcement
mechanisms. As such, the FTA favours narrow economic interests, and is
bound to lead to greater conflict as well as further violence in
Honduras.<br />
<br />
We call on Canadian parliament to refrain from passing legislation to
implement the Canada-Honduras FTA and for the Conservative government
to reconsider its priorities around Honduras, putting priority on the
wellbeing of communities, human and labour rights.<br />

<span style="color: black;">The Atlantic Regional Solidarity
Network (ARSN) is a network of people and organizations in Atlantic
Canada who work in solidarity with the people of Latin America and
the Caribbean according to their wishes and needs in the struggle for
self-determination, peace and justice. ARSN is committed to working
for changes in Canada which will be beneficial that struggle. This
includes supporting the struggles of Indigenous nations and other
communities in Canada in their defence of their territory and the
earth for the benefit of all.</span></div>
<div align="LEFT">
<br /></div>
The Atlantic Regional Solidarity Network stands in solidarity with Elsipogtog Mi'kmaq First Nation and the grassroots Indigenous people of Wabanaki as they assert their
legal Aboriginal rights and responsibilities to their traditional
territory and resources by opposing shale gas exploration, and
supports the coalition of Mi’Kmaq, Maliseet, Passamaquoddy, Acadian
and other Maritimers gathered around the Sacred Fire in Kent County,
New Brunswick engaged in non-violent defence of Mother Earth.<br />
<br />
ARSN calls on Canada and New Brunswick to recognize and respect
Indigenous rights to self-determination, including the right of Indigenous peoples to free, prior and informed consent regarding all
decisions that affect them, their territories, and resources. We also
condemn federal and provincial government’s failure to respect and
adhere to the Aboriginal and Treaty rights of Indigenous communities
in Canada, the criminalization of non-violent defenders that has
taken place to date, and the unequal application of the law to
indigenous peoples opposed to shale gas exploration in New Brunswick.<br />

We
write at this moment to ask for your help. Those who struggle in
defense of human rights in Honduras, already shaken by months of
relentless violence, are now reeling from the recent murders of two
prominent human rights lawyers.</div>

On
September 22, Antonio Trejo-Cabrera, a courageous attorney representing
peasant groups in land conflicts in the Aguán region of Honduras, was
gunned down. Trejos had recently presented a constitutional challenge
to the highly contested "model cities" venture advanced by corporate
investors and the Honduran government. Trejo planned to travel to
Washington D.C. in coming weeks to testify at the Inter American
Commission on Human Rights with peasant leaders. He had received death
threats in the months leading up to his killing. </div>

Two
days later, Manuel Díaz-Mazariegos, a public prosecutor with the human
rights division of the Attorney General's office, was gunned down. In
2008, Díaz Mazariego had participated in a hunger strike against
corruption and for transparency in the Attorney General's office.</div>

is a menacing climate of insecurity and violence in Honduras, and human
rights defenders have been targets of threats, harassment, physical

Bertha Oliva of COFADEH<i> (Committee of the Victims of the Detained and Disappeared of Honduras)</i> issued an urgent plea to the international community:</div>

want to paralyze us by picking us off piece by piece. I continue to
trust in the people of Honduras, because they are wise. The people keep
walking, demanding. It is clear where the repression comes from and who
the repressors are. To stop us they will have to kill all of us.
International solidarity to <b>spread the truth about what is happening in Honduras</b> will be key in this situation."</i></div>
